Ecuador is one of the most exotic origins still left relatively unexplored, and it seems the coffees produced here are becoming more popular by the season. Some of the best coffees we’ve had in the last couple of years have been from this country, and the diversity of flavours that exist here is the stuff of dreams! From our experience, the best lots come from the north and south of the country and the flavours can range from rich caramels and deep purple fruits to coffees that are bright, zesty and floral. We’ve been looking forward to roasting coffee from Ecuador since we started and this was certainly worth the wait!
The climate, geography and traditional varieties found in Ecuador is the perfect recipe for an extraordinary cup but this doesn’t come without its challenges. It’s location on the equator means selective picking is especially difficult and in many regions, coffee is harvested throughout the year. A branch will often contain coffee at all stages of development with green cherries, ripe cherries and blossoms side by side. With almost continuous picking throughout the year, farmers must manage the harvesting, processing and preparations for export simultaneously. This extended picking cycle is extremely costly and is one of the reasons why Ecuadorian coffees command higher prices than it’s Andean neighbours.
Harvested in October 2018, this coffee is produced by Vitalianio Merino on his 7 hectare farm in the southern province of Zamora. At 70 years old, Vitaliano is a wonderful example of someone who truly loves their work. Within the region, he is a grower who stands out for the quality of his crop and in 2017 he won the Bacamoros cup, an event where the 100 best producers in the area are recognised. Winning this competition has only made Vitaliano more determined to improve the quality and environmental practices on his farm and in 2 years time he will qualify for organic certification.
Every now and then we come across a coffee that really blows us away and this is certainly one of them. Laden with yellow fruits, delicate florals and a distinct sweet melon aftertaste, this is one of the most balanced and well structured coffees we’ve ever purchased. Expect an intense honey sweetness with a coating mouthfeel to match. Perfect for any filter brew method, this coffee is versatile and incredibly moreish. It doesn’t get much better than this!
