Rwanda is known as the land of 1000 hills which is perhaps why there is a wide range of flavours associated with the coffee that grows here. For us, Rwandan coffees are unique, often bright, complex and fruit driven with a richness that is almost unexpected.
Located in the Karongi region, Western Rwanda, Gitesi is the name of the washing station owned and run by Alexis Gahizi and his son Aime. Built in 2005, Gitesi is one of 300 stations in the country producing fully washed coffee. To maintain a good supply of high quality cherry, Alexis and Aime have fostered strong relationships with the producers in the local community. They offer competitive pricing and have introduced a bonus system, rewarding farmers for the quality of their crop. The season here runs from March through to August, with the best lots usually coming from the May to July pickings.
We source all our Rwandan coffee through Nordic Approach who do an incredible job selecting coffees with distinct fruit driven characteristics and this is no exception. There is a lovely refreshing quality to this coffee, expect notes of green apple and vanilla with an incredibly clean, tea like finish. This is our first Rwandan coffee of the season and what better way to kick it off!
