Perla Negra or “The Black Pearl” is a community blend of coffees from a group of seven producers in the mountains of Chiquimula and Zacapa. The coffees from each producer share similar flavours and characteristics, but the volumes are too small to be sold individually. Just like the coffees we use for our Teamwork espresso, they have been blended at origin to make a single, larger lot. We love using these community blends, especially for espresso where we require larger volumes. We think this coffee makes a fantastic espresso, and the farmers that contributed, were paid premiums for the quality they produced.   

The department of Chiquimula is colloquially known as La Perla de Oriente due to its beautiful landscapes and architecture, as well as the beauty of the people who live there. Chiquimula is also known for being a cradle of art and artists, with many of Guatemala’s best poets, writers, singers, and musicians originating there. Esquipulas is a municipality located inside this department and is known for the Black Christ, a wooden image of Christ now housed in the Cathedral Basilica of Esquipulas. It's for this reason the coffee is named Perla Negra. 

Harvested in January and February this year, we picked this coffee for its unique flavours, sparkling acidity and crisp, clean finish. In ways, this coffee reminds us of some of the more tropical Ethiopian lots, with notes of ripe yellow fruit and subtle florals.
