Despite simple equipment, minimal infrastructure and hardly any governmental support, it's encouraging how many smallholder farmers are producing exceptional coffees in Peru. Sadly, the vast majority of these lots are blended together and sold for much less than they’re worth. The country is known for its organic certified coffees at low prices, which means producers earn a small premium for the certification, but there is no incentive to produce a quality product. In some areas, the price for certified coffees are so cheap, they bring down the price paid to other farmers that cannot afford certification, but are producing higher quality coffee. This situation is unsustainable, and has been for some time.

Fortunately, things are changing. There are a number of organisations focused on building the speciality segment by teaching producers how to improve cup quality and rewarding them financially for their investment. With a focus on the North, around Jaen and San Ignacio in Cajamarca, this marks the fifth year we’ve purchased coffee from Peru. Together with Origin Coffee Lab, our importer Nordic Approach have developed quality programs with small communities in a few selected areas. The results so far have been impressive! This lot produced by Rosa Ramos, was a real stand out from their selections this year, and we’re delighted to be sharing it with you now.

Expect a fantastically fruity and full bodied espresso, with notes of orange, apricot and cream.

Rosa and her family grow, harvest, pulp and ferment all of their coffee at their farm, La Colmena. The processed coffee is then sold as parchment to Origin Coffee Lab, who mills the coffee, prepares the export documentation and transports the coffee to port. Origin Coffee Lab then sells the coffee to our importer, Nordic Approach, who ships the coffee to their warehouse and arranges the onward transport to our roastery.
