Big Nothing is our decaffeinated house espresso from Colombia. As the name suggests, these beans are big in flavour, with less than 3% of the caffeine you would expect from Arabica coffee. This lot comes from a group of coffee farmers from Pitalito, who are committed to improving the quality of their crop. Meticulous hand sorting and processing is practiced at each individual farm, with special attention paid to the drying process to ensure consistency, uniformity and a clean cup profile. The producers who contributed to this lot sold their coffee to the exporter Raw Material as dried parchment. The coffees were then blended and hulled at the dry mill before being sent for decaffeination.

Sugarcane E.A. Decaffeination is a natural process that not only maintains fantastic integrity of green coffee flavour, but also allows us to offer a coffee that is grown, processed and decaffeinated all at source. This coffee is processed at the Descafecol plant in Manzales, Colombia where Ethyl Acetate derived from 100% sugarcane and mountain water is used to remove over 97% of the caffeine present. With the full decaffeination process happening at origin, this provides a secondary income to the country, and has benefits for cup quality too. Unlike other decaffeinated coffees that are shipped to Mexico, Germany or Canada for processing, this coffee is shipped directly to our European warehouse. By minimising the time spent in transit, this coffee can be roasted while it's still fresh. This also reduces its carbon footprint.

All of the producers that contributed to this lot are part of the Red Associations collective. Each producer grew, harvested and processed their coffee before delivering it to the drying bed facilities and QC infrastructure at the community central hub in the town of El Carmen. The lots were then sorted, graded, selected, packed, cupped, and exported. Our importer Raw Material monitors the coffee through all production, storage and export stages until it arrives at their warehouse in Antwerp, Belgium. From there, Raw Material arranges the onward transport to our roastery.
