The Guji region of southern Ethiopia is a remote place, beautifully forested and in many ways an untouched area of the country. With lots of young trees, fertile soils and high altitudes, the coffees from this region have become very popular in the last few years - known for their balanced acidity, full body and delicious tropical flavour.

Founded in 2019, Buku Abel the name of the washing station located in Dimtu town, Guji. The sunlight exposure, cold winds, and rich, fertile, red soil found in the area provides the ideal environment for producing quality coffee. The farmers deliver their cherries to the washing station around midday, and it's common practice to further sort the coffee here until the late afternoon. The average plot size is between 0.5 - 2 hectares, with semi-forest and garden type of vegetation. There are approximately 1800 - 2400 trees planted per hectare, with each tree estimated to produce around 3 kg of cherry. There are a mix of coffee varieties cultivated here, and some of which have not been formally identified.

This coffee is different to everything else you will find in our current range, because it has been processed using the natural method. This processing method involves drying the coffee as whole cherries, and gives the coffee a more fermented flavour when brewed. It's estimated, the natural process uses ten times less water than the traditional washed method, making it a less environmentally intensive way of producing coffee. For this reason, we’re making a conscious effort to buy more coffees processed this way.

    Importer: Nordic Approach

Approximately 500 farmers deliver their cherries to the Buku Abel washing station for processing. The dried parchment must then be approved by the Ethiopian Commodity Exchange (ECX) checkpoint where its contents are graded and registered as exportable product before it is warehoused in Addis Ababa. The exporter, Highland Coffee Development then mills the coffee, prepares the export documentation and transports the coffee to the port in Djibouti. Our importer, Nordic Approach, ships the coffee to their warehouse in Belgium and arranges the onward transport to our roastery.
