Variety: PacamaraHonduras is something of an exception in Central American coffee production. Over the past decade, the country has significantly increased its coffee output, establishing itself as one of the world's leading Arabica producers. In the 2016/17 coffee year, Honduras overtook Ethiopia to become the world's third-largest Arabica producer, an impressive achievement for a country of its size. Although the two countries have since alternated between third and fourth place, Honduras's production growth has been remarkable.
Yet, despite its position on the global production stage, Honduran coffee remains relatively underrepresented in the speciality coffee market. Behind its impressive production figures is an industry facing considerable challenges. For generations, smallholder farmers have struggled with fluctuating global coffee prices, coffee leaf rust and the limitations of small-scale farming. These pressures make it increasingly difficult for producers to remain profitable, with many receiving prices that fail to cover their cost of production.
Thankfully, things are beginning to change. Farmers are increasingly recognising the value of investing in quality, processing and traceability. Through cooperatives and producer groups, they can pool resources, share knowledge, access technical support and invest in infrastructure that would be difficult to afford individually. These collective efforts are helping producers gain greater control over their coffee, moving beyond competing on volume alone and creating opportunities to secure greater recognition and value for their work.
This coffee, produced by Leubrin Sanchez, is a wonderful example of that progress. It comes from a small group of producers growing coffee in the Montecillos mountain range, spanning the departments of La Paz and Comayagua. Here, the importer Semilla has done a fantastic job working alongside smallholder farmers as they make the transition towards speciality coffee production. After decades of selling their coffee as cherry to the local market, these producers are now developing the skills, infrastructure and knowledge needed to process and sell their coffee as a higher-quality, traceable product. The results have been remarkable.
