Rwamatamu is a family-owned coffee washing station located in Rwanda’s Western Province. Founded in 2015 by husband and wife Rutaganda Gaston and Mukantwaza Laetitia, Rwamatamu was born from a desire to provide for their family while actively addressing the poverty they witnessed in their local community. What began as a small venture quickly grew into a thriving operation, driven by the high quality of coffee produced in the region.

Gaston has long understood that the foundation of a sustainable business lies in strong, respectful relationships. Today, he is widely admired throughout the Rwamatamu Valley, where his work is supported by a community that recognises his integrity, mutual respect, and dedication. This passion has been passed down to his daughter, Marie Bernice, who plays a vital role in the business. She supports the family’s work by translating negotiations, developing educational materials, and managing marketing efforts.

This is the second year we have purchased coffee from Rwamatamu, and in 2025 we were able to travel to Rwanda to meet Gaston, Laetitia, and Bernice in person. This visit allowed us to experience firsthand how Rwamatamu operates and lay the foundations for our first direct relationship in Rwanda — something we’re very excited about.

This coffee has been roasted for espresso and you can expect a bright and syrupy cup with notes of orange and baking spices.
